Before the first note
Get your instrument ready.
Start with a condition check.
Look over the instrument, case and accessories. Note loose, damaged or stuck parts. Avoid forcing a key, valve, slide or joint that will not move normally.
If it has been stored for years, smells musty or has an uncertain condition, have a qualified repairer assess it. Follow the maker’s care instructions for your specific instrument.
Ask what needs attention now, what it will cost and when the instrument will be ready. A repair assessment can help you decide whether to use, rent or replace it.
A routine you can adapt
Keep the next session simple.
Choose a short amount of time that feels manageable. These are starting ideas, not a prescribed practice schedule.

Settle in.
Have your music, stand and instrument ready. Begin with familiar sounds or an exercise selected with your teacher.

Give one thing your attention.
Pick a small passage, a rhythm or a change between notes. Slow down enough to notice what is happening. Separate unfamiliar rhythms from fingerings if that helps you.

Play something you enjoy.
Choose music within reach and let enjoyment be part of the session. The goal does not have to be a public performance.

Leave a note for next time.
Write down one thing that became clearer and one thing to revisit. If a session feels too demanding, shorten or simplify the next one.
You can ask for help
A refresher lesson can give you direction.
Tell the teacher what you used to play, how long you have been away and the music you hope to make. Ask for suitable starting material and feedback on the habits you are rebuilding.
