An example, at your pace
Your first day, week and month
These are suggested milestones, not deadlines. Repeat a step or stay with it longer whenever you need to.
- First day
Choose what comes next.
Find your instrument, or decide which one you want to play. Look for obvious damage or stuck parts without forcing anything. Write down one tune you would enjoy returning to.
If the instrument has been stored for a long time or you are unsure of its condition, arrange a check with a qualified repairer before playing.
Instrument preparation - First week
Make a little room for music.
Choose a place and a repeatable time. Try familiar material at an unhurried pace. Work on a small section, then end with something you enjoy.
A teacher can help you choose suitable music and review instrument-specific technique. You can ask about a single refresher lesson before deciding on an ongoing commitment.
- First month
Try a connection.
Contact an ensemble, adult class or teacher. Ask about the experience expected, current openings and whether an observation visit is possible.
Review what fits your week. Keep the useful parts of your plan and adjust the rest. Joining a group can be a later step.

Confirm the details.
- Ask whether you should observe or bring your instrument.
- Confirm the date, address, room, parking and accessible entrance.
- Ask about music, a stand, fees, registration and any audition.
- Explain your experience and time away so the director can advise you.
Make the visit manageable.
- Bring the supplies the group requests and a pencil for music markings.
- Ask when to arrive and whom to meet.
- Ask for help finding your part and following the rehearsal routine.
- Afterward, consider the music, pace, travel and welcome you experienced.
Your first visit is a chance to learn whether the group fits you, too.
